This species is a native pioneer species (will thrive in an area cleared after disturbance) for northern climates. Paper Birch is a relatively short-lived species, subject to bronze birch borer, but beautiful when it gets its "day in the sun." White Birch is a fast-growing tree with attractive, white, peeling bark. This tree is good for shorelines and reforestation after fires or clear cutting.
