Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), also called Canada hemlock, is a slow-growing long-lived tree which grows well in shade. Many species of wildlife benefit from the excellent habitat that a dense stand of hemlock provides. This tree also ranks high for ornamental planting as it is great as a hedge or natural fencing. Plant in alkaline soil that is moist and well-drained. These will need protection from deer as they love to snack on them.
