American plum is a small, native understory tree to 35 ft. with fragrant, white flowers in showy, flat-topped clusters in early spring. Fruit ripens to a shiny, bright red in August or September. It has a short, crooked trunk - with scaly, black bark - and a graceful, open crown. This native plum can be eaten fresh or used in preseres, jellies, and wine. Numerous birds eat this fruit as well. It has a great soft mast for white-tailed deer and well used as a est tree by birds and small mammals. American Plum roots have a suckering habit that makes it good for erosion control.
