Northern Red Oak is native to the Midwest and is the most common oak found in our area. It has a beautiful red color in the fall and is used for timber. It transplants readily and grows faster than most oaks. Northern Red Oak prefers a well-drained, rich woodland site- best in sandy, loam soil. It is tolerant of air pollution and salt. Red Oaks play host to a variety of mammals and birds. Red oaks are susceptible to oak wilt. We suggest planting them 100 ft. apart to avoid eventual root grafts that allow the disease to spread from tree to tree. Prune oaks in the dormant season to avoid attracting beetles that may carry oak wilt and avoid pruning in April-July.
