Bitternut Hickory is a medium-sized, native tree with large, compound leaves, which turn a beautiful color in early fall. It produces a four-part nut approximately 1" in diameter. While inedible to humans, the nuts are highly attractive to wildlife. It does not transplant easily, so these young seedlings are a good opportunity to bring this species to your natural area!
Though it historically has a more southerly range, our region is becoming increasingly suitable for Bitternut Hickory.
