Beaked Hazelnut is the native hazelnut to our area. This shrub is dense and mound-shaped, with yellowish-brown catkins that are showy in later winter and early spring. Its fall colors vary from bright yellow to a deep wine-red. A member of the birch family, the Beaked Hazelnut has protein-rich nuts that are a favorite for red squirrels and chipmunks. It also is great for ruffed grouse, pheasant, woodpeckers, and blue jays.
