CONSERVATION DISTRICT

Why are Conservation Districts Important? Michigan's Conservation Districts are "unique" local units of State Government, that utilize state, federal and private sector resources to solve today's conservation problems. The guiding philosophy of all Conservation Districts is that decisions on conservation issues should be made at the local level, by local people, with technical assistance provided by the District staff and partner agencies. The Dickinson Conservation District has brought over $1.5 million in water quality improvement grants to the county in the last ten years; as well as servicing some 500 walk-in/call-in landowner questions EACH year, free forestry assistance, adult and school education programs, the annual tree sale, etc.

Michigan Conservation District funding is in jeopardy due to the proposed 2008 budget cuts in the State of Michigan. The Dickinson Conservation District receives $19,200 from the State of Michigan annually. This funding equates to millions of dollars of local conservation on the land. Please call your local representative to show your support of Michigan Conservation Districts and to help restore funding.
