Landscaping for wildlife is not as difficult as it might seem. A diverse landscape with many plant species supports an abundance of wildlife. By planting certain plant species on your property you can increase wildlife abundance on your land. Creatures ranging from white-tailed deer to hummingbirds and monarch butterflies will respond to your landscaping plan if it includes the habitat components they need for survival.

You can realize other benefits when you landscape for wildlife including: energy conservation, soil conservation, natural beauty, natural insect control, windbreak and shelterbelt benefits, food production and increased property value.

In landscaping for wildlife it is most important that you provide the four basic needs of wildlife -- food, water, shelter, and space. Small parcels of land can be enhanced for wildlife habitat. These include small eroded areas, bare knobs, borrow pits, gullies, abandoned roads and railroad rights-of-way, gravel pits, stone piles, sand blows, sinkholes and odd corners of cropland.

Some wildlife areas have vegetation suitable as food and cover for animals and need little or no improvement except protection. Others may need to be improved by planting grasses, legumes, shrubs or trees to provide for the needs of your wildlife.
