Pine Creek Watershed Project

Education

With the support of an EPA Section 319 Grant and the Dickinson Conservation District, an Information and Education Campaign was launched in the Pine Creek Watershed. Students, teachers, loggers, and volunteers learned about the effects of non-point source pollution on surface water and how Best Management Practices can be utilized to reduce it.

Volunteers contributed 502 hours in support of the Pine Creek Information and Education Project. Activities includedAdvisory/Volunteer Meetings, Individual Monitoring Training, Adopt-A-Project Sites, Adopt-A-Monitoring Site, Stream Clean Up, Implementation Assistance, Exotic Species Signage, and Field Trip Volunteers.

Three Logger Education Workshops demonstrated BMP's in protecting water quality.

Volunteers joined to clean up this site on Brown's Creek.

Envirothon Students studied and raised awareness about exotic species.

Students and adult watershed volunteers monitored the benthic macrovertibrates in several streams, learning about the effects of sediment depposition in the streams.

Industrial Arts (Tech Ed) students helped survey, design, and build a recreation trail footbridge.

Several independant study students got on the job training out in the field and in the office through the watershed project.

Presentations on Water Quality were given at Breitung Twsp. Schools Environmental Camp Sanford.
Project information was displayed at the Dickinson County Fair

The distinctive Pine Creek Logo was used on signs, hats and shirts to display communtiy participation. Signs are placed throughout the watershed to identify cooperators.
A curriculum entitled "Watersheds in the Science Classroon" was developed for a firle trip to observe streams and sites with pollution concerns.
