Welcome... from your friends at the Dickinson Conservation District!
"We are your local natural resource resource"
Announcing the 2012 Mesic Conifer Reforestation Program... This is a joint effort between Conservation Districts and the MDNR Wildlife Division to replant Hemlock in areas where Hemlock historically grew and where they might provide needed winter cover and MANY other environmental benefits. They are being offered this year only at a special price on our tree order form below, and at an even better rate for 1000 or more Hemlock plugs. Feel free to gather some friends.
Do you know why Hemlock disappeared from the landscape?
Do you know what bird species rely on Hemlock?
Do you know how Hemlock modifies the climate of a forest?
Thanks to a cooperative agreement with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, a new private lands forester, Sara Wall, has joined our staff! The goal of this project is to encourage more private forest landowners to take an active role in managing their forest land. The Dickinson Conservation District and the Natural Resources Conservation Service are offering this forester's services for a FREE site visit and brief plan to landowners in Dickinson, Iron, and Menominee Counties.
Call to set up an appointment today! Minimum acreage is 5 acres and there is no maximum number of acres. This program will be available for three years. Please contact the District at (906) 774-8441 or sara.wall@mi.nacdnet.net.

Emerald Ash Borer Purple Survey Trap Program
The 2011 Emerald Ash Borer Trapping Survey Project that the Dickinson CD administered, included 1587 sticky purple traps being placed in Ash trees across five southern U.P. Counties. These counties included Menominee, Dickinson, Iron, Gogebic, and southern Ontonagon Counties and are part of a National EAB Survey. The traps were installed in late May-early June and were removed late Aug-early Sept to coincide with the flight activity of the adult beetles. Other EAB projects are under way in U.P. counties that have already discovered EAB and are working to isolate and manage for them.
Remember to do your part: DON'T TRANSPORT FIREWOOD OUT OF
THE COUNTY WHERE IT WAS HARVESTED!
The WILD RIVERS INVASIVE SPECIES COALITION is a great resource for helping identify and manage invasive species on your land or in the water. We have a weed wrench available for loan, a portable billboard available for special events, and a number of opportunities for volunteerism. Dickinson Conservation District represents our county on this coalition of five counties all working toward educating and managing invasive species (Florence, Forest, Marinette -WI, Dickinson, Menominee-MI) See the website : www.wrisc.org
Interested in helping combat Invasive Species? Join our Invasive Species Rapid Response Team. Contact Ann at the Conservation District for more info. We had several successful "weed events" this summer, thanks to a great group of volunteers!
